Hi, I'm Nic- just an average 30-something struggling with overcoming being messy. As a working mom of two young children, I find myself navigating the often turbulent waters of homemaking amidst the demands of daily life. Over the past few years, my responsibilities have multiplied, leaving me feeling overwhelmed and stretched thin. God has recently laid on my heart that I have not been caring for my home or family as I should. I didn't grow up in a Christian home, and I wasn't taught many homemaking skills, so watch my transformation as I learn these things. I am embarking on a new journey from overwhelm and clutter to find peace in my home for my family.
The recent transition into a larger home was intended to provide our family with more space and comfort, but along with that, my struggles with cleanliness have amplified. I often feel like I am drowning in clutter and mess. Initially, I believed that a transition to a larger home would be an opportunity to establish a more orderly environment where my family could thrive. However, the reality has proven to be quite different. The additional rooms and spaces come with the challenge of maintenance and upkeep, often resulting in chaos rather than the sanctuary I envisioned. As I juggle work, childcare, and household responsibilities, I frequently find myself falling short in creating an inviting and functional home.
This blog is not merely a channel for sharing my journey but also a space for fostering connections among women who understand the complexities of homemaking. Through collective insights and experiences, we can strive toward our ideal family environment, initiating steps to improve our homemaking abilities. My journey in redefining my homemaking and motherhood began with this motivation.
Homemaking, often regarded merely as a chore, is in fact depicted in the Bible as a vocation deeply rooted in spiritual and moral significance. My conviction surrounding homemaking has evolved as I unearthed numerous scriptures that portray it as a high calling for women, essential to nurturing families and cultivating a sanctuary where faith can flourish. According to Proverbs 31:27, a virtuous woman "looks well to the ways of her household and eats not the bread of idleness." This verse serves not only as an endorsement of industriousness but as an assertion of the value God places on diligent attention to our homes.
Also, Titus 2:4-5 encourages women to be "keepers at home," directing them to love their husbands and children. The implication is clear: homemaking is more than a societal role—it reflects a God-ordained mission. This biblical guidance motivated me to reassess my approach to my household. It shifted my perspective from viewing homemaking as a mundane obligation to embracing it as an act of worship, a spiritual discipline that honors not only my family but also God.
Embracing this biblical mandate also involves understanding the essence of hospitality and care within the home. 1 Timothy 5:14 emphasizes that women should manage their households well to avoid reproach. As I engage with these teachings, I recognize that being a homemaker is inherently an expression of devotion and service—thus, my aim to elevate my homemaking skills transcends the pursuit of aesthetic appeal. This shift signifies a commitment to create an environment rooted in love, faith, and grace, reflecting God’s goodness within the walls of my home.
In light of these biblical principles, it becomes clear that the act of homemaking is a vital component of living out my faith, enriching both my spiritual journey and my family's well-being. I'm currently reading a great book, Every Home a Foundation, by one of my favorite authors, Phylicia Masonheimer, that goes into this concept in depth. Phylicia is a theologically sound teacher on Instagram, and I have learned a lot about caring for your home and family from her.
As a busy working mom, the struggle with maintaining an organized home often feels insurmountable. My natural tendency toward messiness manifests itself in all areas of our living space, leading to a cycle of guilt and frustration. With a full-time job that requires my time and energy, I frequently find it challenging to strike a balance between hours on the job and time I want to spend caring for my children's needs and the upkeep of our family home. This reality is one that many women can relate to, yet it often goes unacknowledged amid societal expectations of perfection in homemaking.
The daily chaos of life with young children often results in a home environment that can feel more overwhelming than comforting. Toys scattered throughout the living room, dishes piling up in the sink, and laundry baskets overflowing with unwashed clothes serve as constant reminders of my struggles. These situations have not only eroded my confidence in maintaining a clean living space but have also contributed to feelings of inadequacy. I frequently wonder if I am meeting the standards set by many momfluencers on Instagram, leading to self-imposed pressure that only compounds the messiness.
As I embark on this journey to better homemaking, my primary focus will be on implementing systems that promote organization and cultivate a sense of peace within our household. The first step involves effective time management; establishing a structured daily routine will allow us to allocate specific time slots for chores, family activities, and personal downtime. By prioritizing tasks and breaking them down into manageable segments, I aspire to create an environment where responsibilities do not feel overwhelming but instead contribute to a well-functioning home. Clean Mama's Guide to a Peaceful Home is another inspiration that I have gleaned a lot of great information from. I have not yet implemented any of her systems, but I plan to start. Another implementation that will help in this journey is a planner. I use a very similar one right now that I downloaded as a pdf, edited to make my own, but is not offered online anymore. Paper planners are essential to me to get myself organized and feel like I can tackle the day.
Decluttering is another essential system I intend to implement. A clutter-free environment promotes mental clarity and fosters tranquility. To achieve this, I plan to develop a systematic approach to decluttering by focusing on one room at a time, identifying items that no longer serve a purpose, and organizing belongings in a manner that enhances accessibility. This process will not only simplify cleaning but will also help instill habits of organization that can be maintained over time.
Along this journey, I also want to discuss and connect with you on motherhood, faith, my book/product recommendations, and so much more! We can chat from work-life balance to homeschooling, I'm here for it all. I'm learning and growing in this high calling right along with you!
I want to be clear though, I do not want to have a cleaner home because I'm striving to earn God's love. As Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Since we are not saved by our works, having a clean home will not save me. It is only my faith in Jesus Christ, who died on a cross for my sins, that has saved me. It is a matter of wanting to turn my heart from my sin and being made new because I am saved.
I invite readers to engage with me on this quest for improved homemaking. Sharing our insights, challenges, and successes can foster a sense of community, providing inspiration and accountability for all who are endeavoring to create a nurturing environment for their families. Together, we can develop effective systems that lead to a more peaceful and organized home for everyone involved.
